What makes a provider successful
Read the notes, then try the questions. Each one is marked the moment you press Check, and shows the right answer and why.
Key ideas
- In a strong economy customers have more money and spend more on eating out and holidays. In a weak economy they spend less and choose cheaper options.
- A rise in VAT means higher menu prices or lower profit.
- Reduce, reuse, recycle cuts waste and costs and appeals to customers. Seasonal and local food is fresher and has fewer food miles. Food miles are the distance food travels.
- New technology can speed up service and booking, cut errors and paper, and give customers convenience: online booking, ordering by tablet or QR code, cashless payment, key cards and stock software.
- The media can bring customers (good reviews, adverts, social media) or drive them away (bad reviews, negative coverage). Competition from other providers matters too.
- A full answer links the factor to its effect on the business.
Key terms
- Food miles
- The distance food travels from where it is grown or made to the plate.
- Sustainable
- Meeting today's needs while harming the environment less.
- Reduce
- Cut down how much waste is made in the first place.
- Recycle
- Collect waste so it can be made into new things.
- Cashless payment
- Paying by card or phone instead of cash.
- Review
- A customer's opinion of a provider, often online.
Common mistakes
- Naming a technology without saying how it helps. 'TVs in the rooms' is not enough. Say how it helps the guest or the business.
- Thinking only good reviews matter. Bad reviews and negative coverage can lose customers.
- Writing 'it is good for the environment' with no reason. Say how: buying from a local farm cuts food miles, so less transport pollution.
Exam tip
Use 'because' or 'so'. For a 4-mark explain question, make two developed points, each as factor, effect, result. Lists of factors stay at the bottom of the mark scheme.
