Symptoms and anaphylaxis
Read the notes, then try the questions. Each one is marked the moment you press Check, and shows the right answer and why.
Key ideas
- Visible symptoms can be seen by others: vomiting, diarrhoea, rash, facial swelling, pale or sweating skin, breathing difficulty, weight loss.
- Non-visible symptoms only the person feels: feeling sick, stomach-ache, weakness, painful joints, constipation, wind.
- Food poisoning typically causes vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach-ache and chills. Intolerance typically causes bloating, wind and stomach-ache. An allergic reaction may cause a rash, hives and swollen lips.
- Anaphylaxis is life-threatening. Signs include swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing and collapse.
- Emergency steps: spot the signs, call 999, help the person use their adrenaline auto-injector, and call 999 even if they feel better afterwards. Stop serving the food.
Key terms
- Visible symptom
- One other people can see, such as a rash or vomiting.
- Non-visible symptom
- One only the person feels, such as feeling sick.
- Anaphylaxis
- A severe, life-threatening allergic reaction.
- Auto-injector
- A pen that gives a dose of adrenaline, such as an EpiPen.
- Onset
- How soon the symptoms start after eating.
Common mistakes
- Giving two wordings of the same symptom. 'Red marks' and 'blotches' are one symptom, the rash, so score once.
- Calling anaphylaxis a bad rash. It is a life-threatening emergency.
- Thinking staff do not need to call 999 once the EpiPen has been used. Call 999 anyway.
- Thinking lactose intolerance can stop breathing. It causes bloating and a sore tummy, not a throat swelling.
Exam tip
In 'give two symptoms' questions give different symptoms and check each is visible or non-visible as asked. For anaphylaxis, put the steps in order and always include call 999.
