Fieldwork: change in an urban area
Read the notes, then try the questions. Each one is marked the moment you press Check, and shows the right answer and why.
Key ideas
- Urban enquiries use primary methods (such as counts, surveys and environmental quality scores) and secondary data (such as the Census).
- The Census is the official count of people and households, published by area. In England and Wales it is held every ten years.
- The Index of Multiple Deprivation ranks neighbourhoods. A neighbourhood in decile 1 is among the most deprived 10%.
- A conclusion states a pattern and explains it, with evidence.
- When a question says 'use evidence from Figure 3', quote the figure.
Key terms
- Census
- The official count of people and households, held every ten years.
- Decile
- One of ten equal groups. Decile 1 is the most deprived tenth.
- Quantitative
- Data in the form of numbers.
- Qualitative
- Data in the form of descriptions or opinions.
- Environmental quality survey
- A scored judgement of how pleasant a place is.
Common mistakes
- Calling any secondary data 'Census data'. Census data is the official population count.
- Saying environmental scores are 'subjective' and stopping. Explain how scorers may differ.
- Using your own opinion when asked for evidence from a figure. Quote the data.
Exam tip
A conclusion is more than a description of what you counted. State the pattern, then give a reason for it using your data.
