Fitness testing
Read the notes, then try the questions. Each one is marked the moment you press Check, and shows the right answer and why.
Key ideas
- We test to get a baseline, spot strengths and weaknesses, set goals, monitor progress and stay motivated.
- Match the test to the component: Cooper 12-minute run (cardiovascular fitness), Harvard step test (cardiovascular fitness, using pulse in recovery), sit and reach (flexibility), grip dynamometer (strength), vertical jump (power), 30 m sprint (speed), Illinois agility run (agility), one-minute sit-up and press-up (muscular endurance).
- A test is valid if it measures what it says for that sport. It is reliable if the same conditions give consistent results.
- Normative data lets you compare a score with people of the same age and sex, using a ratings table.
Key terms
- Baseline
- A first test before training starts, used to compare with later tests.
- Validity
- Whether a test really measures the component and suits the sport.
- Reliability
- Whether the test gives consistent results when repeated in the same way.
- Normative data
- Results from a large group, used to compare a performer with others.
- Quantitative data
- Data in numbers, such as seconds or metres.
- Qualitative data
- Data as descriptions, such as 'excellent'.
Common mistakes
- Matching the wrong test to the component, such as the Harvard step test for muscular endurance.
- Describing a test too thinly to repeat. Give the steps: equipment, what the performer does, and what is recorded.
- Saying a baseline test shows the training programme works. It only gives a starting point.
Exam tip
When asked to select a test, name the test, say which component it measures and why it suits the performer's sport. Read the ratings table by finding the right age and sex first.
