Health, wellbeing and lifestyle

Read the notes, then try the questions. Each one is marked the moment you press Check, and shows the right answer and why.

Key ideas

  • There are three types of health benefit. Physical (stronger muscles, a healthier heart). Emotional (less stress, more confidence, higher self-esteem). Social (making friends, teamwork, belonging).
  • Lifestyle choices include diet, activity level, recreational drugs (such as nicotine and alcohol) and work, rest and sleep balance.
  • A sedentary lifestyle can lead to being overweight or obese, coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, loss of muscle tone and poor posture.
  • Smoking can cause lung cancer and bronchitis, and it makes gas exchange in the lungs less effective.

Key terms

Sedentary
Sitting or lying down for most of the day with little activity.
Osteoporosis
Bones become weak and brittle. Weight-bearing exercise lowers the risk.
Coronary heart disease
The arteries that supply the heart muscle narrow.
Type 2 diabetes
The body cannot control blood sugar properly.
Recreational drug
A drug taken for pleasure, such as nicotine or alcohol.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing up the types of benefit: making friends is social, not emotional.
  • Giving 'sedentary' as a lifestyle choice. It is the result of choices, such as low activity.
  • Writing 'diabetes' on its own. The sedentary risk is Type 2 diabetes.

Exam tip

Say which type of benefit you mean and give a specific example for the person in the question, such as 'emotional: playing netball reduces stress'. For a risk, say how activity lowers it.
