Geographical fieldwork
Read the notes, then try the questions. Each one is marked the moment you press Check, and shows the right answer and why.
Key ideas
- You carry out two enquiries in contrasting environments, one human and one physical. The steps are: enquiry question, data collection, presenting data, analysing, conclusions and evaluation.
- Primary data is collected first-hand by you, such as a pedestrian count, questionnaire or field sketch. Secondary data is collected by others, such as census figures or a printed map.
- Sampling can be random, systematic (regular intervals) or stratified (in proportion to sub-groups). Collection methods gather data. Presentation methods, such as graphs and maps, display it.
- Analysis uses the mean, median, mode and range, and trends in scattergraphs. A weak relationship only partly supports a hypothesis. One day of data cannot show change over time.
- Evaluate your methods: sample size, timing, accuracy and how well the data answered the question.
Key terms
- Hypothesis
- A statement that your enquiry sets out to test.
- Primary data
- Data you collect yourself, first-hand.
- Secondary data
- Data collected by someone else, such as the census.
- Systematic sampling
- Choosing sites or people at regular intervals.
- Risk assessment
- Identifying hazards before fieldwork and how to reduce the risk.
- Justify
- Give reasons why a method suited the enquiry aim.
Common mistakes
- Thinking census figures or websites are primary data. Primary data is what you collect yourself.
- Writing that justify means describing how you did it. Justify means giving reasons why it suited the aim.
- Saying a positive trend proves the hypothesis. You judge how strong the relationship is and mention anomalies.
Exam tip
Paper 3 Section B has questions on unfamiliar fieldwork and on your own enquiries. Use the right enquiry: if the question says human or physical, answer with that one. Justify means giving a reason linked to the aim.
