Dynamic UK cities: one major UK city
Read the notes, then try the questions. Each one is marked the moment you press Check, and shows the right answer and why.
Key ideas
- Choose ONE major UK city. Know its site (the land it sits on) and its situation (its position compared with other places and routes).
- National migration means moves within the UK. International migration means moves from abroad. Both change a city's population and culture.
- Cities decline when industry closes and grow when new industries arrive. De-industrialisation can cause job loss, low income and dereliction.
- Brownfield land has been built on before. Greenfield land has never been built on.
- Regeneration can bring jobs and better places to live. It can also raise rents and house prices and push out low-income residents.
- Sustainable living has environmental, social and economic strands.
Key terms
- Site
- The actual land a settlement is built on.
- Situation
- The position of a settlement compared with other places, routes and resources.
- Brownfield site
- Land that has been built on before.
- Dereliction
- Abandoned, disused land or buildings.
- Regeneration
- Investing in an area to improve it and bring it back to life.
Common mistakes
- Thinking site and situation mean the same thing.
- Saying regeneration helps everyone. Some people lose out.
- Saying sustainability only means cutting pollution. It also covers fairness and local jobs.
Exam tip
Paper 2 asks about the city you studied twice in every paper, for 2 or 4 marks. Writing the name of the city earns no mark, but local detail such as a named area or project helps the second mark of each point. Different reasons need different ideas. Repeating a reason in new words is not credited twice.
