One emerging country

Read the notes, then try the questions. Each one is marked the moment you press Check, and shows the right answer and why.

Key ideas

  • Globalisation is the growing connection between economies, people and information through flows of money, goods and data.
  • A transnational corporation (TNC) is a company that operates in several countries. TNCs can bring jobs, tax and new skills. They can also bring low wages, pollution and profits sent abroad.
  • A changing industrial structure means a falling share of jobs in farming and a rising share in industry and services.
  • Rapid GDP growth shows that total output has grown. It does not mean the income is shared equally.
  • You study ONE emerging country. Learn its location and trade links, its international role, how it has changed, and the effects of that change.

Key terms

Globalisation
Growing connections between economies, people and information.
TNC
A transnational corporation: a company that operates in several countries.
Industrial structure
The share of jobs in farming, industry and services.
GDP
The total value of goods and services a country produces in a year.
International role
A country's influence in the world, for example in trade, investment and international bodies.

Common mistakes

  • Saying globalisation means the same as economic development. It is the growing connection between countries.
  • Saying TNCs bring only benefits. Include costs such as low wages, pollution and the closure of local firms.
  • Saying international role just means where a country is or how much it trades.

Exam tip

The 8-mark question in Section B of Paper 1 has 4 extra marks for spelling, punctuation and grammar. Use real facts and figures from your own emerging country, because named-place marks are rewarded. Evaluate means judge how successful something was and reach a conclusion. Telling the story is not enough.
