Commercialisation and sporting behaviour
Read the notes, then try the questions. Each one is marked the moment you press Check, and shows the right answer and why.
Key ideas
- The golden triangle links sport, media and sponsors. The media shows the sport to a big audience. Sponsors pay to be seen by that audience. The sport uses the money to improve facilities.
- Each group gains and loses differently: the sponsor (brand seen, but damaged if a performer misbehaves), the sport (more money, but changes to match formats), the performer (endorsements) and the spectator (more matches on TV, but pay-per-view costs).
- Sportsmanship is fair play, such as helping up an injured opponent. Gamesmanship bends the rules without breaking them, such as time-wasting. Deviance breaks the rules or norms, such as doping or match fixing.
- Consequences of deviance: bans, fines, loss of sponsorship and loss of respect from fans.
Key terms
- Commercialisation
- Turning a sport into a business through sponsorship, media and money.
- Sponsorship
- A company pays a sport or performer for advertising exposure.
- Endorsement
- A performer lends their name to promote a product.
- Gamesmanship
- Bending the rules to gain an advantage, such as time-wasting.
- Deviance

- Sportsmanship
- Fair play and respect for opponents and officials.
Common mistakes
- Writing about the club when the question names the sponsor or the spectator.
- Saying rule changes 'make the sport safer' as a reason sponsors like them. They like more exciting matches, with more viewers.
- Swapping the three terms. Gamesmanship bends the rules; deviance breaks them.
Exam tip
Write from the group named in the question and give a consequence, not just a fact. For predictions from trend data, find the steady change per year and add it on.
