Pearson Edexcel GCSE (9-1) Physical Education (1PE0) · Spec C2 3.1.1 and C2 3.1.2
Participation in sport
Read the notes, then try the questions. Each one is marked the moment you press Check, and shows the right answer and why.
Key ideas
- The five personal factors are gender, age, ethnicity, disability and socio-economic group.
- Each can create barriers, such as cost, access, transport, fewer teams offered, or few role models.
- Ways to raise participation: role models, adapted activities (such as wheelchair basketball), specialist clubs, media coverage, subsidised sessions, ramps and lifts, and club transport.
- A trend shows how participation changes over several years. It can fall in one age group while it rises in another.
Key terms
- Participation rate
- The percentage of a group who take part.
- Socio-economic group
- A grouping by income, job and education.
- Role model
- Someone who inspires others to take part.
- Adapted activity
- An activity changed so more people can take part, such as wheelchair rugby.
- Specialist club
- A club set up for the needs of one group.
Common mistakes
- Giving money, wealth, weight, bullying or illness as a personal factor. Use only the five.
- Writing that a group 'cannot' do sport. Barriers affect opportunity, not ability.
- Explaining the barrier but not saying how it affects participation.
Exam tip
For 'explain' on a personal factor, give the barrier and then its effect: 'low income, so kit and fees are too costly, so fewer people join'. For the 9-mark 'evaluate', add a counter-argument for each factor.
