Types of guidance and feedback
Read the notes, then try the questions. Each one is marked the moment you press Check, and shows the right answer and why.
Key ideas
- Guidance helps a performer learn a skill. Visual: demonstrations, videos, diagrams. Verbal: spoken instructions. Manual: the coach physically moves the body. Mechanical: equipment such as armbands or a harness.
- Guidance suits beginners. Manual and mechanical guidance can keep a beginner safe and build confidence. They can leave a performer relying on help and not feeling the real movement.
- Feedback tells a performer how it went. Intrinsic comes from the performer's own feel. Extrinsic comes from outside, such as a coach. Concurrent is during the movement. Terminal is after it.
- Elite performers rely more on intrinsic feedback. Beginners need extrinsic feedback.
- Feedback data can be quantitative (41 of 50 passes completed) or qualitative (a description).
Key terms
- Manual guidance
- A coach physically moves part of the performer's body through the skill.
- Mechanical guidance
- Using equipment to help, such as armbands or a harness.
- Intrinsic feedback
- Feedback from the performer's own senses.
- Extrinsic feedback
- Feedback from an outside source, such as a coach or video.
- Concurrent feedback
- Feedback during the movement.
- Terminal feedback
- Feedback after the movement has finished.
Common mistakes
- Mixing up guidance and feedback. Guidance helps you learn the skill. Feedback is about how it went.
- Giving an example (such as a demonstration) when the question asks for the type (visual).
- Not recognising video analysis after a match as terminal and extrinsic feedback.
Exam tip
Name the type, not just an example, and keep the advantage and disadvantage for the guidance you named. In the 9-mark 'evaluate', match each type to the performer's level and finish with a judgement.
