Goal setting and mental preparation

Read the notes, then try the questions. Each one is marked the moment you press Check, and shows the right answer and why.

Key ideas

  • Goal setting gives a performer motivation, focus and helps them keep to training (adherence).
  • In 1PE0, SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-bound.
  • A target should be reviewed. If a performer meets it easily, it can be raised to keep them challenged.
  • Mental rehearsal is picturing a skill being done well before you perform it. Imagery uses pictures, sounds and feelings in the mind.

Key terms

SMART
Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-bound.
Measurable
Success can be judged by a number, such as a time.
Time-bound
The target has a deadline.
Mental rehearsal
Going through a skill in your head before you do it.
Imagery
Using pictures, sounds and feelings in the mind to prepare.

Common mistakes

  • Using the wrong words for SMART. Use the 1PE0 words: A is Achievable, R is Realistic and T is Time-bound.
  • Writing SMART as a list of definitions rather than applying it to the performer's own target.
  • Thinking mental rehearsal means physical practice in the gym.

Exam tip

Apply each SMART word to the performer's target with a number or date, such as 'swim 200 m in under 2 minutes 40 seconds by June' (measurable and time-bound). Do not just define the letters.
