Injury, PAR-Q and performance-enhancing drugs
Read the notes, then try the questions. Each one is marked the moment you press Check, and shows the right answer and why.
Key ideas
- A PAR-Q checks whether a person is safe to start exercise. It does not stop injuries in a session.
- Ways to reduce the risk of injury: correct use of the principles of training, following the rules, wearing protective clothing and equipment, and checking equipment and facilities.
- RICE treats a soft tissue injury: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.
- Drugs: anabolic steroids build muscle. Beta blockers steady the hands. Diuretics lose weight fast and can mask other drugs. Narcotic analgesics hide pain. Stimulants reduce tiredness. EPO helps the blood carry more oxygen. Growth hormone builds muscle mass and speeds recovery.
Key terms
- PAR-Q
- A questionnaire that checks whether it is safe for someone to start exercising.
- RICE
- Rest, ice, compression, elevation.
- Strain
- Damage to a muscle or tendon.
- Concussion
- An injury to the brain from a blow or shake.
- EPO
- A drug that helps the blood carry more oxygen.
- Beta blocker
- A drug that steadies the hands, useful in a sport such as archery.
Common mistakes
- Answering 'how to prevent injury' with a PAR-Q or with drinking water. Use the four prevention methods and apply them to the sport.
- Mixing up the drug groups, such as narcotic analgesics with beta blockers.
- Saying growth hormone makes bones longer or 'gives power'. Its effect is more muscle mass and faster recovery.
Exam tip
For the 9-mark 'evaluate', cover each named drug or method in turn: what it does for this performer, a risk or limit, and then give a clear overall judgement. A list of facts alone stays in the lowest level.
