Training methods, warm-up and cool-down

Key ideas
- Continuous training suits a marathon runner. Fartlek changes pace and terrain in one run. Interval training alternates work and recovery to build speed. Circuit training moves round stations. Weight training uses a high load and few repetitions for strength. Plyometrics (hopping and bounding) builds power.
- Fitness classes: spinning (aerobic, static bikes), body pump (barbell, low load, high repetitions), yoga (flexibility), pilates (core strength and control), aerobics.
- A coach chooses a method using the sport's requirements, the facilities available and the performer's current fitness.
- A warm-up has a pulse raiser, stretching and skill-based practice. It also prepares the mind. A cool-down uses light exercise to lower heart rate gradually and help remove lactic acid.
Key terms
- Fartlek
- Continuous running where pace and terrain change.
- Interval training
- Periods of work followed by periods of rest or recovery.
- Plyometrics
- Explosive training such as hopping and bounding, to develop power.
- Pulse raiser
- The first part of a warm-up that gradually raises heart rate.
- Cool-down
- Light exercise after a session to lower heart rate gradually.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a method with a generic reason ('weights are good for strength'). Link it to the named performer and the component they need.
- Using a hard, fast drill, such as a flat-out sprint, as the pulse raiser. It should start gently and build up.
- Saying stretching in a cool-down removes lactic acid. The light exercise helps remove it.
Exam tip
For a 'justify' or 'select' question, name the method, say which component it develops, and tie it to the performer's sport or level. For the 9-mark 'evaluate', give a strength, a limitation and a final judgement for each method.
