Hospitality and Catering Unit 1 revision questions

Steve Benton, computing teacher and founder of SubjectHub

Unit 1 of the Eduqas Hospitality and Catering award is the exam: 80 marks in 1 hour 20 minutes, worth 40% of the qualification. Unit 2 is the practical, and in most departments that is where the lesson time goes. So Hospitality and Catering Unit 1 revision gets squeezed into the spring.

What I built

Short, regular practice that marks itself, so revision can happen at home without anyone marking it by hand. There are over 1,000 questions, written to the 5409 specification, in ten ready-made courses:

  • Unit 1 homework, five-a-day starters and topic tests
  • Unit 1 mock exams
  • a food safety course, a profit calculation drill and calculation drills
  • Unit 2 knowledge homework, starters and topic tests: the theory behind the practical, never the live brief
A Unit 1 question as a pupil sees it on a phone.

The profit drill shows the level of detail. It covers gross profit, net profit and the cost of a portion, with the working shown, for spec point 1.1.4. A pupil who can do those in October is not learning them in May.

Every answer is marked as it comes in, and you see the results by pupil and by question. The how it works page shows that marking on real screens, and school pricing explains the packages.
