Free live quiz games for GCSE Computer Science
Steve Benton, computing teacher and founder of SubjectHub
Ten minutes left on a Friday, and the class has had enough of writing. I wanted a free live quiz game for GCSE Computer Science that asked about what we had just covered. Not someone else's quiz on something close to it.
Why I built my own
I used the big quiz sites for years. They work, but I spent the time they saved hunting for a quiz that matched the spec point. So I put games on top of the question bank my classes already use for homework.
You choose a topic, choose a game and put the code on the board. Pupils join at subjecthub.co.uk/play on a phone, a tablet or a school computer.
Two of the games
In Gold Rush a right answer opens a chest. It might hold gold, a bonus, or the chance to steal from someone else. The stealing is the part pupils remember.
Big Catch is calmer. A right answer earns a cast, you pick one of three bobbers, and the heaviest haul wins. It works as a starter.
There are 23 games now, all on the same questions, so you can change the game without changing the topic. You can see how each one plays before you use it.
