Improve the Brightside app advert storyboard

A draft for a 30-second animated advert for a radio station's new app. Improve it for the animator.

The scenario

Brightside FM: podcast and app launch

Brightside FM is a community radio station in the seaside town of Saltmere, run by volunteers aged 14 to 21 for young listeners. It broadcasts on FM and streams online. The station is launching 'Turn It Up', a weekly podcast in which young people discuss local issues, and a free app where listeners can stream the station live, play podcast episodes and send song requests.

The task

Brightside FM has drawn a storyboard for the 30-second animated advert that promotes its new app. The animator will draw and animate the advert from it, but the draft mixes in a scene that is not animation, and some scenes are missing details the animator needs.

Improve the effectiveness of the storyboard for use by the animator. The pictures are already in the draft. The advert must feel bright, quick and playful, never talk down to teenagers, last about 30 seconds and end on the Brightside FM logo. Marks will be awarded for: relevant components and conventions used; layout; annotations that explain how the improvements help the animator in their role.

[9 marks]

What it is marked on

  • Storyboard techniques used consistently on every panel: scene numbers, shot types, camera angles and movement, timings, lighting, locations, sound and transitions
  • Panels that cover everything the brief asks for, in a clear sequence, adding up to the running time
  • Notes that explain how your choices help the animator

The marks fall in OCR's three levels. How R093 is marked explains them.

Questions

Is this the real exam?

No. It is a practice question in the style of OCR's R093 paper: a client scenario, a document for a named user, and an extended answer marked by three levels. SubjectHub wrote it from the specification and the published mark schemes; the real papers are set by OCR.

How is it marked?

Straight away and for free, code checks it: which storyboard techniques you used consistently on every panel the animator needs (scene numbers, shot types, angles, movement, timings, lighting, locations, sound and transitions), the running time against the brief, and an estimated level from that count. With a free account you also get the full mark: your notes are read, the brief and the draft's problems are checked, and code places the level by the same rule, so you get a mark, the level, feedback and one next step.

Do I need an account?

No, not to try it: answer it here and get the free check. For the full mark and examiner-style feedback, create a free account. Sign-up opens in a new tab, so your answer stays on this page, and it is kept in this browser if you come back later. Signed-in users get 10 full marks a day.
