The scenario

Harbourlight Film Festival

Harbourlight is a five-day independent film festival held every October in the seaside town of Saltmouth. This year it will screen 40 films, including short films made by young people from the town. The festival needs a 60-second trailer to show online and before films in local cinemas, a printed programme listing every screening, and a ticket app so that visitors can book seats on their phones.

The task

The Harbourlight Film Festival director has drawn a storyboard for the 60-second trailer that will play online and before films in local cinemas. The video editor will assemble the finished trailer from the clips and the graphics, but the order is muddled and the timings, transitions and sound are patchy.

Improve the effectiveness of the storyboard for use by the video editor. The pictures are already in the draft. The trailer must feel warm and welcoming, last about 60 seconds, suit every audience because it plays before films of every age rating, and end with the festival dates and how to book. Marks will be awarded for: relevant components and conventions used; layout; annotations that explain how the improvements help the video editor in their role.

[9 marks]

What it is marked on

  • Storyboard techniques used consistently on every panel: scene numbers, shot types, camera angles and movement, timings, lighting, locations, sound and transitions
  • Panels that cover everything the brief asks for, in a clear sequence, adding up to the running time
  • Notes that explain how your choices help the video editor

The marks fall in OCR's three levels. How R093 is marked explains them.

Questions

Is this the real exam?

No. It is a practice question in the style of OCR's R093 paper: a client scenario, a document for a named user, and an extended answer marked by three levels. SubjectHub wrote it from the specification and the published mark schemes; the real papers are set by OCR.

How is it marked?

Straight away and for free, code checks it: which storyboard techniques you used consistently on every panel the video editor needs (scene numbers, shot types, angles, movement, timings, lighting, locations, sound and transitions), the running time against the brief, and an estimated level from that count. With a free account you also get the full mark: your notes are read, the brief and the draft's problems are checked, and code places the level by the same rule, so you get a mark, the level, feedback and one next step.

Do I need an account?

No, not to try it: answer it here and get the free check. For the full mark and examiner-style feedback, create a free account. Sign-up opens in a new tab, so your answer stays on this page, and it is kept in this browser if you come back later. Signed-in users get 10 full marks a day.
