The scenario

Starling Press: Nightglass graphic-novel launch

Starling Press is a small independent publisher. It is launching 'Nightglass', a mystery graphic novel for readers aged 11 to 16, in two editions: a printed book and a digital edition that readers buy and read online. The launch will take place at a comic convention, supported by a launch website where readers can read a free preview chapter and pre-order the book.

The task

Starling Press has drawn a storyboard for a trailer for the graphic novel Nightglass, a mystery for readers aged 11 to 16. The director will decide how each scene should feel and how the actors perform it. The draft is patchy and some choices work against the story.

Improve the effectiveness of the storyboard for use by the director. The pictures are already in the draft. The trailer must feel dark and mysterious, last about 40 seconds and end on the Nightglass logo. Marks will be awarded for: relevant components and conventions used; layout; annotations that explain how the improvements help the director in their role.

[9 marks]

What it is marked on

  • Storyboard techniques used consistently on every panel: scene numbers, shot types, camera angles and movement, timings, lighting, locations, sound and transitions
  • Panels that cover everything the brief asks for, in a clear sequence, adding up to the running time
  • Notes that explain how your choices help the director

The marks fall in OCR's three levels. How R093 is marked explains them.

Questions

Is this the real exam?

No. It is a practice question in the style of OCR's R093 paper: a client scenario, a document for a named user, and an extended answer marked by three levels. SubjectHub wrote it from the specification and the published mark schemes; the real papers are set by OCR.

How is it marked?

Straight away and for free, code checks it: which storyboard techniques you used consistently on every panel the director needs (scene numbers, shot types, angles, movement, timings, lighting, locations, sound and transitions), the running time against the brief, and an estimated level from that count. With a free account you also get the full mark: your notes are read, the brief and the draft's problems are checked, and code places the level by the same rule, so you get a mark, the level, feedback and one next step.

Do I need an account?

No, not to try it: answer it here and get the free check. For the full mark and examiner-style feedback, create a free account. Sign-up opens in a new tab, so your answer stays on this page, and it is kept in this browser if you come back later. Signed-in users get 10 full marks a day.
